Throwback Thursday: The Secret of Chanel No. 5
The Short & Sweet of it: A captivating story of the history behind the world's most famous perfume. Coco Chanel's development of the fragrance did not come without plenty of complications- in both her business & her personal life.
I've been a fan (along with the rest of self-proclaimed somewhat stylish women everywhere) of Chanel No. 5 for as long as I can remember... basically since I was tall enough to reach my mom's perfumes on the counter. I also love semi-biographical books written about almost any iconic fashionista/businesswoman. So naturally I had to read The Secret of Chanel No. 5 by Tilar J. Mazzeo and loved it. Mazzeo writes more than just an account of Coco Chanel's life, she tells the detailed story of the creation of one of the most successful and sought after products of the 20th century. The intricate steps of creating a perfume are beyond fascinating- making it understandable why Coco Chanel became so obsessed with getting the scent absolutely perfect. This is a great read for women young and those not quite so young. And, best of all, next time you spritz on some Chanel No. 5 you'll appreciate it even more.
