Throwback Thursday: Jackie, Ethel, Joan

The Short & Sweet of it: Jackie, Ethel, and Joan Kennedy were/are three very different women each completely dedicated to the Kennedy name. This book provides an incredible glimpse into their glamorous, controlled, and fragile lives.

I don't know if it's because I was a political science major or because I am obsessed with RHOBH, but Jackie, Ethel, Joan: Women of Camelot by J. Randy Taraborrelli remains one of my favorite biographies. Each woman is shown in both times of power and weakness, and in periods as an independent woman and a Kennedy spouse. The Real Housewives have nothing on these ladies. Their drama is real, juicy, and scripted only by a Kennedy patriarch sorry Andy Cohen. Yes, this book is loooong but it is so worth it. Their lives make the book move quickly (just like your favorite fiction characters do) because honestly they're just so darn fascinating. If you've been nervous about starting a long biography in the past, get over it and pick this up!! And you might even be able to add something actually interesting to your next family dinner when your crazy uncle has one too many manhattans and brings up politics over turkey.

Oh Bernadette, I'm So Glad I Found You

The Short & Sweet of it: A mom (Bernadette) with way too much anxiety on her plate is on the brink of a meltdown. Throw in a couple of neurotic PTO mothers, a fiercely loyal daughter, and an overworked husband and you get a deliciously enjoyable read.

So unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably seen Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple somewhere. And that's because it is amazing. I had been in a bit of a reading drought and needed something to get me back in the swing of things, and thank goodness I found Bernadette. I found myself LOLing (literally) from the start, and not every book has that capability. The writing was so clever- hilarious emails make up a large portion of the book- that I never got the least bit bored. Because there are relatively few characters, you really get to know each one and all their quirks. It made me want to have kids just so I can send them to a private school and be frenemies with the other over-involved parents whose lives revolve around the next parent-teacher meeting/fundraising opportunity. Or did I want that before... I can't remember. Regardless, this book made me smile through and through, and what else can a girl ask for?

Finally!

Hello, hello! Finally a place for young(ish) women to go to and find a good, fun, heartwarming, hilarious, interesting and entertaining book to read. I can't promise all those qualities in one book (except for the gem I'm about to tell you about), but I can tell you I'll deliver as best I can! My current method of finding books to read in my spare time ranges from looking at "what others bought" on Amazon & judging books by their covers at my favorite local book stores. My goal is to make this blog another alternative to help you find the next beauty for your bookshelf.

Try not to let one bad experience from the mandatory book lists from high school and college scar you for life. I guarantee books can be just as juicy as your favorite reality show and I know this because I religiously watch Bravo. So have FUN reading, because it's wayyy better than you remembered.
